Bug Lighthouse:
History & Future

With Paul Kreiling of East End Seaport Museum 

Come learn about the iconic Lighthouse that graces the entrance to local waters. When was it built? Why? How does it fit into local history? How is similar to and different from other lighthouses? Why is it called “Bug” Lighthouse? What do we know about its keepers? Is it really haunted? When and how did it burn down? When and how was it rebuilt? What is its role in navigation today? What are the plans for its future?

Paul Kreiling is a sailor, painter, designer, rigging specialist, volunteer, community leader and all-around great guy. He is Trustee Emeritus and volunteer curator for the East End Seaport Museum and is leading the charge to restore Bug Lighthouse

EMCA Mission

We achieve our purpose by:

  • Protecting East Marion’s rural character and agricultural heritage and enhancing community life in the hamlet.

  • Acting as a catalyst for uniting and mobilizing the East Marion community around issues of shared concern.

  • Monitoring planning, land use, zoning, transportation, public safety and other issues affecting East Marion and informing and educating community members about such issues so they can make informed decision and take appropriate action to protect their rights and interests.

  • Communicating with Southold Town officials and other relevant organizations and governmental bodies on behalf of East Marion
